Can AI build your website? What it does well and where you still need people

An honest look at AI website builders: what they're good for, where they fall short, and how to combine the two.

AI tools can now produce a website in minutes. For some situations that's genuinely useful. For a business that depends on its website to win customers, there are a few things worth knowing before you click "generate".

What AI does well

  • Speed. A starting layout, colour scheme and placeholder text in minutes is great for testing an idea.
  • First drafts of copy. AI can turn your notes into headings, service descriptions and FAQs to edit.
  • Images and icons. Useful for simple graphics, as long as you're careful about what they show.
  • Technical help. Explaining settings, suggesting fixes and writing small pieces of code.

If you need a quick page for an event, a holding page while you plan, or a prototype to test an idea, an AI builder can be a sensible choice.

Where it falls short

It doesn't know your customers

A website that brings in enquiries is built around what your customers worry about, the questions they ask before buying, and why they choose you over someone else. AI can only guess at that. The result often looks fine and says very little.

Everything starts to look the same

AI builders draw on common patterns, so many generated sites share the same layouts and the same phrases. In a crowded market, looking like everyone else is a real cost.

The details that affect results

Page speed, accessibility, clear calls to action, search engine basics, tracking and forms that actually reach your inbox are easy to get wrong. They rarely show up in a quick preview, but they decide whether the site works. We cover the most common problems in why most websites fail.

Ownership and lock-in

Some platforms make it hard to move your site, domain or content elsewhere later. Check what you own and what happens if you stop paying before you commit.

The best of both

The strongest approach today combines AI speed with human judgement:

  1. Strategy first. Agree who the site is for, what they need to know and what you want them to do.
  2. AI for drafts. Use it to speed up first versions of copy, ideas and layouts.
  3. People for the parts that matter. Your story, your proof, your photography and video, and the final edit.
  4. Proper build and checks. Speed, mobile, accessibility, search basics and tracking tested before launch.

Questions to ask before using an AI builder

  • Is this a quick test or the main way customers will find us?
  • Can we move the site and domain if we change our minds?
  • Does the copy sound like us, and would a customer learn anything useful?
  • Have we tested it on a phone, and do the forms reach us?
